    Chapter 1

    Annabelle’s Dilemma

    Sixteen year old Hilary unlocked the front door at 8 Hampton Court, letting herself and seven year old Annabelle inside. Hilary would care for Annabelle each day after school until her mum and dad arrived home from work. Both girls were attending Bamford College, within walking distance from Annabelle’s house.

    Annabelle is the only child in her family. She has long strawberry blonde hair and lots of freckles on her petite face. Annabelle’s freckles are just one of the reasons why some kids at school tease her at times. Her mum says her freckles make Annabelle special, but she does not agree, often scrubbing her face hard in the bath, in the hope that the freckles will magically disappear.

    Annabelle knew in her heart that some of the girls in her class wanted to be her friend, but they were scared of being teased themselves, so they didn’t want to play with her. This made Annabelle feel sad.

    Coming inside the front door of her house, Annabelle dropped her bag and said, ‘I don’t feel like staying at home. Can we please ride our bikes to the park?’

    Hilary replied, ‘What a great idea, Annabelle! The sun is shining and there are no clouds in the sky. It’s way too nice to stay indoors. How about we both change out of our school uniforms and into our bike riding clothes?’

    A very excited Annabelle hurried into the kitchen, saying, ‘I’ll get the water bottles’.
