The quiet New England town of Cape Light never seems to change. But in the year 1905, the lives of these four friends will be transformed in ways they never could have imagined. . . .Thomas Kinkade
As America’s most-collected living artist, Thomas Kinkade has become a kind of Norman Rockwell for the new millennium. Kinkade has parlayed his background as a California family man and devout Christian to preside over a growing art empire that includes everything from books and prints to Bible covers and furniture fabric. Virtually unknown until the late 1990s, the self-described "painter of light" has seen his artistic talent develop into a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, a thriving website, a string of walk-in galleries, and a strong presence on the QVC home-shopping network. (A USA Weekend report noted that the artist’s share in the company stock was worth up to $30 million.) Because editions of his prints sell in the millions, an "original Kinkade" is a virtually unattainable object. He is a best-selling author and has illustrated such books as A Child’s Christmas at St. Nicholas Circle by Douglas Kaine McKelvey

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5In New York City in 1905, Rose Forbes desperately tries to fit in at her exclusive all-girl school. When her mother's support of the suffragist movement becomes common knowledge, the other girls treat her as an outcast. Her father's medical practice also suffers after Rose's mother is arrested during a protest. Rose's parents decide that a change of scenery would be beneficial and settle on Cape Light as their new home.Rose is excited about the possibility of new friends and a chance to start over. Kat, Amanda and Lizabeth welcome Rose warmly, but Rose lives in fear that they will shun her if they discover her mother's involvement in the women's rights movement. Rose is more interested in horses than politics and doesn't understand her mother's dedication to the suffragist cause. Rose begins working with an abused race horse, Midnight Star. When she's barred from participating in a jumping competition because of her gender, Rose finally understands and embraces her mother's political views. While the plot is predictable from the start, Rose's love of horses will resonate with many young readers.
