- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5VERY FUNNY!!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I like how this book brought back the previous characters from the series and that they played a role in this book. Overall a good series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a fun romp. I will say that Elizabeth Boyle has some twisty family trees that make it necessary to check the family tree at the front of the book a couple of times. Other than that one criticism I really enjoyed the story.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Lord Langley has been mistakenly presumed dead for years, but is now back in town to clear his name of accusations of treason. This is much to the chagrin of Minerva Sterling, a decent and proper widow, in whose bedroom Langley accidentally stumples and whom Langley bethroths forthwith. Minerva can't help falling for Langley though and together they try to restore Langley's reputation.I picked this up on a whim to read on my iPad and I was both pleasantly surprised and a bit disappointed. I haven't read Boyle's previous books in this series at all. Luckily I felt that in the end that didn't make much difference in understanding the plot. The book begins with a very interesting cast of characters. There's Langley and Minerva, both with their own very intriguing secrets, both very likable and fun. There's the troop of Langley's former lovers, who have taken over Minerva's house in the hopes of seeing Langley again. There's also the charismatic and loyal servants, who all play their part in the story. The mysteries surrounding Minerva and Langley seem like the most interesting part of the whole book. The reader is left guessing how the secrets are ever going to be solved. And here is my biggest bone to pick with the story. I felt like Langley's secrets don't really get solved at all. The writer has come up with this exciting storyline and there's so much promise to it. However for the first 75 % of the book Langley's situation just doesn't seem to move forward at all. Various schemes are made, the exact content and significance of which are left rather unclear to the reader. In the end all is solved in what feels like a rushed series of lucky coincidenses.Add to this the fact that the reader should believe that the two main characters fall in love with each other totally and irrevocably in the space of about three days and the result is rather confusing and slightly irritating as well.Well, despite all its promise this book just wasn't for me. I loved Minerva and Langley, I just thought they had very little time to develop their relationship. The mystery would have benefited greatly from a few extra chapters as well.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I reviewed this book for Romance Reader At Heart website. RRAH's THOUGHTS AND PONDERINGS: For the last three years, Lord Langley has been thought dead, a traitor to his country, and now he is ready to return and clear his name. There you go. That's the main plot. Minerva is one of the three, and the last one of the Standon widows who have been given an ultimatum by Lord Langley's daughter Felicity to `get themselves hitched' or be financially cut off by her husband, the Duke. Well, the other two got themselves `hitched' in HOW I MET MY COUNTESS and MAD ABOUT THE DUKE. Now it was Minerva's turn; with the build up from the previous series, and especially from Felicity's story in LOVE LETTERS FROM A DUKE, I was anxiously awaiting this story. I'd like to let you all know that I loved "The Bachelor Chronicles" and its extension through "The Standon Widows" has been so much fun to read. That is until this book. What happened to the `master spy' we all thought him to be? This man was nothing of what he was purported to be in previous books. And as for the `nannies', well, we could have done without them. For that matter, we could have done without Lord Langley! After I finished reading this book, I wished he was dead and buried, or lost forever! I didn't like him one bit. He was forty going on twenty, and an utter turn-off to me as a reader, so I'm surprised that Minerva fell for him! And now we come to Minerva. We met her in the previous books, but if you decide to read the book, you'll find out a secret about her that I didn't see coming, and I guess that's the only thing I liked about this book. Minerva was one of those characters you love to hate or hate to love. Take your pick! LORD LANGLEY IS BACK IN TOWN was just too disappointing, and I'm going to say that my high expectations of it is the least of the reasons for it. I expected and truly wanted a mature hero and heroine. I was ready for it, and I was let down by his story. There's so much going on in this book that I got a headache keeping it all straight in my head! I say if you need to read it, get it from the Library, but do not spend your money on this book. I wish I hadn't read it; then at least I would have had `my fond memories' of this series.
