- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Cassandra is a young woman, growing up in a hard Colorado mining town. Her family is poor. Her father and older brother work in the mines, she takes care of her younger brother, her mother is dead. She has a gentle, loving spirit. They have nothing to put in the offering plate at church, so she works all by herself and cleans the church--waxing the floors and pews.Luke Taggart owns most of the town. He decides that he would like to have Cassandra as a live-in mistress. Her father refuses, because Cassandra is a good girl. Luke decides to set up her father and brother in a dishonest scheme, to get them out of the way to enable him to swoop in and make Cassandra a bargain that she can't refuse. As always, Catherine Anderson doesn't disappoint. I can always count on needing more space for new favorites on my bookshelves.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Literally just finished reading this and wow, what a great book! I’ll write a nice review later but just needed to get some first impressions written down so I don’t forget!
This was a emotional rollercoaster! The heroine was naive, but sweet and not annoying. I actually thought her character made sense and perfect for the hero. A lot of people would complain about the heroine. She’s not annoying and she’s not stupid just extremely sheltered. She never acts in a way that is stupid but more like a person in a foreign country who doesn’t understand certain ways. She most certainly isn’t TSTL. She doesn’t do anything that is stupid or make your eyes roll. Like run into a fire when specifically told not to.
Is it wrong to be ignorant? Does it automatically means you’re uneducated and stupid? We all ignorant to a lot of things. Just because someone knows more than you doesn’t make them better than you.
Luke went through a lot in his past that explains his behaviors. I wish he opened up more to the heroine, but I kind of understand why. He didn’t want to taint her world for ugly things.
It was funny and very all the moments the hero was going to ‘lay down the law’ with the heroine but ended up doing something he wouldn’t normally do just because she was so sweet. He was completely besotted with and it was fun to watch.
There’s plenty of groveling and it was quite heart wrenching and painful to watch. I wish there was more of an ending but this was written in the 90s and I don’t think it was kind of a standard back then. I think if it didn’t ended so suddenly it would’ve completed the character arcs more.
Another note, it was interesting see how the men controlled Cassie. I wish she had more character arc to make her own choices without being influenced by others. But it’s understandable considering the time period her position. But in the end, aren’t we all influenced by our parents until we leave them and learn the world with our own eyes? - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5My most favorite book of all time! The most beautiful love story and Catherine's best book! Thank you Catherine!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Cassandra is a very sheltered and religious girl in a mining town when she meets Luke Taggert, the richest man in town. Luke is a jerk who takes what he wants, and he wants Cassie, so he connives to get her father and brother thrown in jail. Cassie and her younger brother are at his mercy though she's so naive she thinks she's to entertain him with chess and charades while working in his house. Luke does turn out to have a heart of gold, but it's so late in the book that it is hard to believe. Cassie's constant innocence starts to become unbelievable by then also, so while this was an okay read, it isn't the favorite of my reads from this author.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The Hero of the book starts out as a major jerk...the upside which makes the story a worthwhile read is the fact that he learns from his mistakes and grows into a good person
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love Catherine Anderson's work. Sharply defined characters, a hero who was a real villain in the beginning, but his heart's desire gradually softened him, making him realise that he has a conscience, and redeems himself. I particularly liked Father Tully. He came across as a lovable old rascal. His verbal sparring with an inebriated Luke was sparkling with wit, and very entertaining.
