Introduction
You don't have to be famous to feel famous. You don't even have to be very rich. What you do need is the right environment – that is, a resort that exudes luxury and privilege. One of my concerns as I wrote this book was that it would be mistaken for a star map to the Caribbean , indicating where to find celebrities. It is not. The only celebrity this book is designed to help you discover is yourself, through the seductive magic of secluded hillside villas with private pools fed by waterfalls or palatial beachside resorts whose marble-floored suites are big enough to stage a symphony orchestra. Whether you’re famous or not, you can enjoy the accouterments of fame.
Of course, fame has its price. You can't enjoy a celebrity-style vacation on a shoestring budget, but you don't need to break the bank either. Most resorts reduce their rates in the summer season, which often stretches conveniently from April to December, and some resorts even drop their prices in the shoulder season between Christmas vacation and winter break. Traveling with friends is another cost-saving option. While it's true that a two-bedroom oceanview suite with a dazzling view and a bathtub the size of a plunge pool is more likely to induce that famous feeling than a more affordable gardenview guestroom, two couples can cut the price of the suite in half. Private villas, a popular celebrity option, can cost less than the best hotels when the bill is split by the number of bedrooms. (Fine dining in the Caribbean is expensive, and most villas come complete with a staff to shop and cook whatever you choose.)
MINGLING WITH THE STARS
Remember to respect the privacy of your fellow guests. If you do recognize any famous faces on the beach, or on the balcony next door, do as they would do, and ignore them.
Things To Remember
LUXURY IS RELATIVE
Don’t expect every hotel to have a television, radio, in-room phone or air conditioning. Luxury does not mean a satellite dish on the roof or a fax machine by your bed. It means tranquillity, peace and quiet.
CHILDREN
Not all hotels accept children in high season, and some do not accept them at all. Age limits vary, and may change, so always check on each hotel’s policy when making an initial inquiry.
RESERVATIONS
When making reservations through a toll-free number, remember that all 800 numbers have now changed to 888.
