His work has been recognized with local, regional, and national awards. Born and raised in St. John’s, he holds M.A. and M.S.W. degrees from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Ph.D. in criminology from the University of Manchester, England. Carlson’s long-standing interest in research and criminal justice history led him to publish several works on the correctional system. He has also taught at Memorial, volunteered with a number of community organizations, and worked contractually for the provincial Department of Justice. He lives in St. John’s with his wife, Barb.view less
