An engineer and adventurer, his many exploits included working as a cowboy, managing mines across the world, and building a pontoon bridge across the Suez canal during World War I. In the 1920s, he began writing children's fantasy stories, at first largely for his own children and then later for wider audiences, including adults. He is best known for his novel The Marvellous Land of Snergs.view less
