In 1957 he entered the novitiate of the Pallottine Fathers, a congregation that the founder of Schoenstatt, Father Joseph Kentenich, had belonged to. Until 1966 the Schoenstatt priests were first ordained as Pallottines because the Secular Institute of the Schoenstatt Fathers had not yet been founded. Freshly ordained, Father Hernan went to work at the service of the settlers of Carrascal where he remained for seventeen years. For Father Hernán, material and physical conditions were fundamental to the full development of people as children of God. In 1983 he founded the Corporation of Beneficencia María Ayuda whose goal was to rescue girls from spiritual misery, a project that continues to grow today. Father Hernán died on December 18, 2007, aged 72, having been bedridden for the previous nine years due to illness. His funeral was held at the Schoenstatt Sanctuary Bellavista. On November 20, 2014, the Episcopal Conference of Chile gave its approval to begin the process of canonization.
