After high school, he served two years in the US Marine Corps, after which he returned to Indianapolis and worked for the New York Central Railroad as a locomotive fireman. He then went to work for Eli Lilly and Company, retiring in 1992 after thirty-five years in the agricultural research division. In 1968, He received his pilot’s license and spent several years as a flight instructor. He has also been a lifelong sailor, captaining sailboats and yachts from Kentucky to Florida, and around the British Virgin Islands. He and his wife have two children and three grandchildren, and currently live in Indianapolis.view less
