He was recruited to join the Critical Care Medicine Division at the Medical School in Pittsburgh. He became a pioneer in the development of critical care medicine and was a founder of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Over the course of his career, he published hundreds of articles, twenty-seven books, and retired as distinguished service professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.view less
