My father abandoned us when I was...view moreI was born on the Canadian prairies during a time when people’s lives were being torn apart by war. My mother and both of her parents became practicing alcoholics. My father abandoned us when I was 4. I remember it as a time of great chaos and great grief. And the answer, it seemed, was always to bury the hurt in a bottle. I never did drink very much. I just didn’t like the taste. But my life was in chaos, and I didn’t know why. I married young, at 18, to a man who became an alcoholic and was violent when he was drinking. The marriage lasted ten years. Now I was a single mom raising two daughters, and not doing a very good job of it, and I did not know why. Everything kept going “wrong”. One day, someone said to me, “have you ever heard of Adult Children of Alcoholics? I began attending meetings regularly, and spent two years working the program. It changed my life.
I learned a lot about health, and harm, and how to tell the difference – for myself and my now grown children. There was lots of material written about how to get well, but not much about how to stay well.
