Elected a member of the Irish Academy in 1992, he was also appointed Director of Irish Book Awards in 1987. He has been Visiting Professor at The Sorbonne, The University of New South Wales and is a Member of the International Association of Anglo Irish Literature. He is a senior fellow of TCD.
Among his publications are a biography of George Moore, Dissolute Characters and An Ulster Renaissance: Poets from the North of Ireland.view less
