James A. Barber served nearly thirty years as a surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy before retiring at the rank of Captain. His assignments included three commands at sea: a guided missile cruiser, a guided missile frigate, and a destroyer escort. Upon retiring from active duty he was appointed CEO and Publisher of the Naval Institute, a position he held for fifteen years.
Captain Barber earned a PhD at Stanford University and has taught at Vanderbilt, the Naval War College, George Washington University, and the Naval Postgraduate School. His awards include the U.S. Coast Guard’s Meritorious Public Service Award, the Navy’s highest Civilian award, the Distinguished Public Service Award, the Bronze Star with combat “V”, and the Legion of Merit.
He has published three other books, including The Military and American Society, co edited with Stephen Ambrose.view less
