Though she began telling stories for her friends and siblings as a child, this shy, quiet girl hated writing and dreaded writing assignments throughout elementary and high school. Though her sister wrote extensively and had short stories published in various publications, Joann focused on telling stories to children and friends—usually with some sort of moral truth illustrated throughout the plot.
