Upon returning to Glasgow in 1976, he gained employment as an office clerk prior to moving to Newcastle in 1977 to start work at St Nicholas Hospital as a Nursing Assistant. Later that same year, he undertook his psychiatric nurse training and qualified in 1980, subsequently taking up post as a Staff Nurse at the hospital’s Collingwood Clinic. In 1983, he went on a period of secondment to complete his registered general nurse training, returning to St Nicholas Hospital as a Staff Nurse in late 1984. Soon after this, he became a Charge Nurse, then Ward Manager in a number of clinical environments including Older Persons Mental Health Services and Psychiatric Rehabilitation. In 2001, he took up his existing post as Practice Placement Facilitator, a role that involves close collaboration between Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust and Northumbria University in relation to the training and education of pre-registration nursing students.view less
