Charles graduated from Wilson High School in Georgia and Savannah State University.
He also served in the United States Army as a paratrooper and served two tours in Vietnam. He is a double-leg amputee and has retired from civil service after thirty years. He is a member of the African Methodist Episcopalian Zion Church of Fayetteville, North Carolina.
He resides in Hope Mills, North Carolina, with his wife of forty-one years, Kathleen Collins.view less
