Department of Comparative Medicine and the first person to be appointed to
the faculty (1966) by the founding Dean (George T. Harrell, MD); David E.
Jenkins, Jr, MD (WRU ’58) was the founding chief of the Division of Hematology
and Oncology and the second clinical faculty appointment in the Department of
Medicine (1970); and John A. Waldhausen, MD (SLU ’54) was the founding chair
of Surgery (1969).
During their tenure they concurrently served in other roles; Lang as Assistant
Dean for Continuing Medical Education and Director of the Cancer Research
Center, and Waldhausen as Interim Vice Provost and Dean of the College of
