Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, he matriculated to Humboldt State University, where he earned his way through college working for an ambulance company. Upon graduating, he and his wife, Gail, moved to Honolulu where they worked for almost four decades at Iolani School. He has a master's degree in athletic administration.
