Something that changes everything. This is a story about love, bad decisions and taking the next step.My name is Martin. I used to work at a public library. I had a girlfriend. I would try to write the occasional short story. Life was... okay. I was happy with what I had. But she wasn’t – she wanted more, she wanted a family. I didn’t (not right then), so she left. I decided to stay behind. A few months later, she called me to tell me she was pregnant. She had met someone and was very happy. I wished her well. She didn’t tell me the new guy was the father. I just made the assumption.I finished my first short story and sent it to an online magazine. It got rejected. I thought about quitting. So I did what I always did whenever I felt that way: I called my girlfriend. My ex-girlfriend. And she told me the new guy had left after her daughter was born. I didn’t tell her about my problem. She had other stuff to worry about.A few days later, I decided to pay her a visit. We talked. I met her daughter. She wasn’t mine, but she could have been. If I had just made the right call. When I got back home, it felt empty. I let a week pass before I called her again. I asked her if I could come over. She said yes and asked about my stories. I told her about the rejection. She told me not to give up on what I felt to be the right thing for me. I decided to take her advice. Four years later, we are still together. Our daughter is almost five now, and we have a two year old son who keeps us up almost every night. My writing career hasn’t picked up yet, but it will. Life will you give everything you need, if you try your best. This I believe.view less
