He has written and edited a dozen books about America's past since his Two Billion Acre Farm, a history of American agriculture, was published in 1945. Among his other books have been This Is the West, This Is the South, The Bench Mark, Hoofbeats of Destiny and Rodeo: Last Frontier of the Old West. While researching Hoofbeats of Destiny—a history of the Pony Express—in 1959-60, he became fascinated by the amazing sequence of events that created The Central Route across our West. Thus he began the 20,000 miles of travel and 18 months of research that produced THE GREAT IRON TRAIL.view less
