He was born on May 4, 1884, in Fresno, California, the third child of Aldea Amazon and Sarah Glasscock. His father was a native of Missouri and had practiced medicine there and later in California.
Glasscock began working for the Fresno Democrat while still attending the University of California at Berkeley. With the help of C.E. Kunze, he published a small newspaper in the community of Greenwater, California, not far from Death Valley. In 1907 Glasscock and Kunze printed a special edition of their paper twelve hours after a fire destroyed their office. Glasscock went on to become an editorial writer for the Chicago Tribune and production manager for Liberty Magazine. In addition to his numerous books about the history of the West, he was also a frequent contributor of stories and articles to national periodicals.
