Her first novel, 'The Green Graves of Balgownie' (1896), was a great success. She became known for her authentic portrayals of rural life in Scotland, and was admired by contemporaries such as Rudyard Kipling and Virginia Woolf. Her work has subsequently gone out of print and fallen into relative obscurity.view less
