Haupt lived as a hobo during the Great Depression when he was 15 years old. Carl served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1966 with the rank of Master Sergeant. In 1992, Carl and his wife Sarah started helping struggling families in Agua Prieta, Mexico, across the border from Douglas, Arizona. They brought food and other necessities, helped build over 100 homes and delivered 25 donated mobile homes. All author royalties from Gary Gatlin: Reluctant Hero go to Angels on the Border, a non-profit organization established by Carl and his wife to continue their charitable work.view less
