Recruited as an apprentice, Fenton completed pilot training and was involved in the Vietnam war and Australia’s acquisition of the F111. Twenty years after his action in Vietnam, Fenton’s life began to unravel and he suffered severe post traumatic stress disorder. His marriage failed and he retreated to his birthplace where he became involved in local government.
