His assignments included a stint as Oklahoma sports editor for the Associated Press and a number of years as Business/Oil Editor for the Tulsa World, the primary daily newspaper in northeastern Oklahoma. He is a graduate of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he studied communications, and he did graduate work in journalism and creative writing at the University of Oklahoma. He also worked as Sports Information Director at ORU. During his tenure there he handled press and publicity when pitcher Mike Moore was the first pick in the Major League Baseball draft and when both the NIT and the NCAA held the first and second rounds of their 1982 national men’s basketball champtionships back-to-back at ORU's Mabee Center arena.
