Educated in psychiatric nursing, counseling psychology, education and business administration at the Universities of Saskatchewan, Alberta and Calgary, the author received appointments as the CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association in Alberta and of the Mental Health Branch and the Mental Health Board of the Government of Alberta. He also taught in the Saskatchewan Department of Health and at Mount Royal College. He served as the elected Chairman of a large school Board, as a Police Commissioner overseeing the work of a major urban police service and he chaired the Board of a Spiritual Centre. He did individual and family counseling in community clinics, owned and managed a franchised restaurant and a human services research and consulting company. The recipient of numerous professional and public service awards including a Governor Generals medal for community service, he has presented at international conferences and written three previous books, one receiving Alberta’s top literary award.
Outside of his addiction to work, Ron experienced a life threatening and debilitating injury while playing hockey. He helped raise four sons and a child who was a government ward and astoundingly somehow sustained an almost fifty-year relationship with his wife Wendy. What he learned through his professional career, through his injury, through community involvements, through his family and friends and largely from his partner Wendy, has provided the fodder for this book.view less
