The father David, the younget son of a small farmer naturally took to the arduous career of agricultural toil which led to the family leading a rather nomadic existence, moving from farm to farm, living in what were known as tied cottages, in search of improved wages and conditions.
Their travels took them from the outskirts of Newport around the county of Monmouthshire and the neighbouring shire of Glamorgan.in South Wales
Robert having passed the entrance exam, struggled to keep abreast of his peers in the three Grammar schools he attended, until he left school aged 15, to contribute to the family income which was necessary due to his fathers ill health in the years crucial to the developement of the growing Bassett family.
Robert also spent his early working life in agriculture, but widened his horizons into road haulage, and during his career graduated to the position of Depot Transport manager of an Oil ditribution company near Chepstow where he remained until his retirement in 1991.
Robert gained international recognition in his chosen sport of amateur boxing, representing Wales on four occasions in the 70's He also loves country music and visited Nashville, Tennessee in the USA in 1985.
