Based on her experience working with many diverse populations, including migrant students, children of working parents and children in affluent communities, Elaine created the Interest Based Learning model to train future teachers and assist current educators in creating high interest classrooms with motivating strategies and activities that involve all students working with the adults in the problem-solving process and building collaborative teams who are all learners together that can make a difference. This method shifts the emphasis away from traditionally structured standardized learning and focuses the curriculum around students’ interests and needs, inspiring their desire to learn and a new dedication to their work.
Through this shift, Elaine was able to introduce new and exciting ways of having the students master core material on a daily basis. A partnership with parents, teachers and students for learning is formed using this model, creating a new level of respect and communication in the class environment.
Author of two previous books (I Am a Blade of Grass and Creating a High Interest Classroom), Elaine Young has also authored a screen play called Flyer, describing the actual obstacles and conflicts she faced in her own journey as a radical classroom teacher who wanted to improve the classroom experience of her students, and how she overcame the barriers to change.
Elaine, who holds a B.A. in Elementary Education from Queens College and a M.S. and Permanent Certificate / Supervisor of Elementary Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz, continues to advocate and teach about the importance of giving the children a voice in all important education issues. She believes if we want a world where we value, appreciate and cherish everybody’s children, then we must involve the children in creating that world.view less
