He was born in Clayton, Illinois in 1894 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Knox College in 1914. Following graduation, he served as both principal and United States History teacher at Knoxville High School, Illinois between 1914 and 1915. Following the war, he received his second Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master’s degree from Oxford University and then returned to America to accept a position as a United States and Modern European History instructor at the Culver Military Academy in Indiana. In 1927, Easum attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a Ph.D. candidate, receiving his degree in 1928. His scholarly interests were concentrated in German history and the history of World War I and World War II.
Easum joined the University of Wisconsin’s history department as assistant professor in 1930, later becoming Professor of History Emeritus, where he remained until his retirement in 1964. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in German and Eastern European History in 1953 and passed away in Madison, Wisconsin in 1979, aged 85.view less
