JOSEPH P. MOODY (1919-1996) was a Canadian physician, explorer and photographer who spent three and a half years in the Canadian East Arctic as a medical health officer for the Canadian Department of National Health and Welfare. He later practiced medicine at the Elliot Lake Clinic in Elliot Lake, Ontario, whilst continuing to pursue his Arctic interests.
Born in Canada in 1919, he lost his parents at a young age and worked his way through college. Originally wishing to study engineering, but unable to locate a university where a full engineering course was available, Moody turned to medicine. He received a Leonard scholarship and graduated from the University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario in 1946.
He immediately applied for government medical service in the arctic, headquartered at Chesterfield Inlet, on the west coast of Hudson Bay, and quickly became a highly reputable physician. He performed with success the roles of general practitioner, surgeon and medical administrator, and during the great polio epidemic of 1949 attained worldwide fame.
After completing his tour of duty at Chesterfield Inlet, he organized his own exploratory expedition, returning in 1954 to organize a number of expeditions for tourist-explorers and scientists.view less
