Dr. Robert Reinhold Ergang (March 24, 1898 - July 16, 1978) was a Professor of History and Economics at New York University and the author of a number of books on European History, including Möser...view moreDr. Robert Reinhold Ergang (March 24, 1898 - July 16, 1978) was a Professor of History and Economics at New York University and the author of a number of books on European History, including Möser and the Rise of National Thought in Germany (1933), Europe from the Renaissance to Waterloo (1954), The Myth of the All-Destructive Fury of the Thirty Years’ War (1956), and Europe in Our Time, 1914 to the Present (1958).
His thesis titled Herder and the Foundations of German Nationalism, which he submitted in partial fulfillment for his Ph.D. degree conferred by Columbia University, also became his first published work in 1931.
He died in 1978 in St. Clare’s Hospital in Manhattan after a long illness aged 80. He is buried at Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens County, New York, alongside his wife of 53 years, Mildred Ergang (née Overbeck, 1898-1990).view less
