R. SmithChristopher NicholsChristopher P. Nichols was born in 1938, the year that Dallas Blood takes place. He is a fourth generation Dallasite. His father, a well-known painter, told him many times that his family was Dallas blood. Almost all of his educational training has been in Texas, first in the Dallas and Richardson public schools, then The University of North Texas for a Batchelor of Arts in Speech and Drama and a teaching certificate. His graduate work was at Southern Methodist University where he received a Masters of Fine Arts in Professional Stage Direction and later studied in England in an advanced theatre studies program.In the sixties, he taught in Bogota Colombia and the Dallas Independent School District. There, he taught Speech, Theatre, English, and Spanish. In 1972, he joined the staff at SMU’s professional Theatre training program.After graduating in 1974, he founded The New Arts Theatre Company, a professional regional theatre. During those years, he directed 30 plays and administered the running of the theatre company. In 1979, he won the National Theatre Critics award for one of the best eight plays produced outside of New York, War Stories by Dennis Trout. In 1984, he left New Arts and directed six more plays as a professional freelancer. He returned to Dallas and DeSoto Public Schools to teach Theatre. In the 90’s, he ran the theatre programs at Grayson College and El Centre College. His last years of teaching theatre were at North Dallas High School. He retired from teaching in 2006.During the last fifteen years, Mr. Nichols has written ten plays, four of them are published by The Dramatic Publishing Company and are produced all around the country. In 1993, he won the Lee Korph play writing award for the the best play written in the U.S. that year for Lamia, also a published piece.All of Mr. Nichols adult life, photography has been an interest. He specialized in theatrical photography, keeping a record of every production he directed or produced. He has made two sixteen millimeter documentaries, one of a rock pop festival in 1969 and a film for the Department of Education named Chile and Its People.Mr. Nichols family started going to Northern New Mexico, where the last third of the novel Dallas Blood takes place, in 1948 and he has been returning every year since. His brother, David has lived in Taos New Mexico for thirty years.Now, Mr. Nichols lives and writes in Dallas with his wife, Libby, and his son, Perry Brooks who is a talented painter.Share this:•Facebook20•view less
