Born to a Baltic German family in Tartu (Dorpat), Imperial Russia (now Estonia), Kersten fought in World War I in the German Army and arrived in Finland in April 1919 with the German forces, obtaining Finnish citizenship in 1920. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the Finnish Army in 1921. After the War, Kersten lived in West Germany and Sweden, obtaining Swedish citizenship in 1953. His war memoirs were first published in English translation in 1947. He died in Stockholm, aged 61.view less
