He was a professor in the Boalt Hall School of Law and the Jurisprudence & Social Policy Program, and previously was professor and dean of the School of Criminology. Later he was named the Elizabeth Josselyn Boalt Professor of Law. "A mainstay of the Center for the Study of Law and Society's activities, Sheldon Messinger contributed greatly to the intellectual development of faculty and students," said his colleague Philip Selznick.
