He started as an instructor in the Mathematics Department, moved on through the academic ranks while being Dean of the College of Liberal Arts followed by a stint as Dean of the Grdauate School of Arts and Sciences. He holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Virginia. His research interests involved explosive stars known as novae.view less
