Had the opportunity to enrol in a Disability Studies program through work, which is what started the process of self reflection and documenting experiences we had experienced.
In working with families I began to realize the choices we all make in how we are going to deal with the challenges that we face. I have seen reactions that are judgemental as well as those that are supportive, mostly based on the personal choice that they themselves have made. (Or judgmental when they have never been faced with these kind of decisions)
When you focus on the "Individual" and their family you realize that we are all unique and there are no right or wrong choices, there are only choices that work for each person, family and situation.
I wanted to give a frame of reference for helping families decide what are the best choices for their own situation, and not necessarily only in regards to children born with disabilities but any of the life changing events that occur during a lifetime.
I am not currently working in the field, but our daughter will always be in our lives so I remain an active advocate and remain involved in the issues surrounding her care as well as the care of others.view less
