At 36 John immigrated with his wife Margaret to Australia where he later started a small agricultural company.

Whilst in Australia he undertook work as a courier driver working in and around the suburbs of Melbourne and it was whilst out doing one of his many deliveries he was inspired to write about the funny side to his work.
