She first wrote verses for children, and went on to write the award-winning Geoffrey Chaucer of England (1946), Shakespeare of London (1949), and Ben Johnson of Westminster (1953).
She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Minnesota in 1930 and was a member of P.E.N. She received three honorary doctorates, numerous awards for her biographies, and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1975.
Marchette Chute authored thirteen books in total, including The Search for God (1941), Introduction to Shakespeare (1951), Stories From Shakespeare (1956), Jesus of Israel (1961) and The Green Tree of Democracy (1971).
She died of pneumonia in 1994.view less
