He spent his boyhood years working on the family farm, going to church and playing sports. After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa, he bummed around, and in 1976 joined the Peace Core. He has two daughters: Pegy, an Internet entrepreneur in New York City; and Rita, a nurse in San Antonio. Nearly every year he and his wife, Adela, visit her family in the Guatemalan highlands.view less
