He is a member of the Poudre Wilderness Volunteers and the Nordic Rangers, Forest Service volunteer groups acting as backcountry rangers on northern Colorado hiking and skiing trails. He has spent the past three summers hiking The Colorado Trail. His book, in which he interviews people traveling the trail, is called Voices of The Colorado Trail.
