Former sergeant with the 7th Infantry Division. I was always an avid reader and was encouraged to write by my AP English teacher in high school, Barbara Clark. She introduced me to Ray Bradbury and Ken Kesey(and some really dreadful Eng Lit. Wuthering Heights anyone?). I reciprocated with libertarian style essays before I knew what that meant, always a week late because it was only a drop of one letter grade, and tried to convince her that The Wall was an example of great poetry. I still think that although earlier Floyd was even better. She submitted a number of my poems to the Florida Council of Teachers of English my senior year without my knowledge, and I was published along with a select few others in their yearly contest. I'll always be grateful to her for that. It's a shame poetry doesn't sell because it's a great medium to relay information. There's nothing more difficult than trying to deliver some form of meaning while reducing the word count as much as possible. No flowery stuff for me. Sometimes I write because I think I should, and sometimes the opening line is just there, and I have to see where it leads. If you're an aspiring writer I say just go for it. If you know an aspiring writer, then support them. There isn't much that's harder than sharing the thoughts you put on a page. There's not much that's more gratifying than having people like it.view less
