His experiences since then have included medical training and practice in hospitals in a mining community in Yorkshire, Barnet, Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and Saskatchewan, Canada, where he also held the post of HM coroner.
He returned to London and settled into general medical practice in North London in 1963. In 1971, he and his wife, June, established Springdene Nursing and Care Homes, which today provides excellent care for a large number of senior citizens in four modern, purpose-built nursing and care homes in London.
Following prostate cancer treatment and a coronary artery bypass graft, he retired from primary health care in 1996 and began a second career as an author. He and his wife have lived in East Finchley for more than forty years, while close by live their three children and nine grandchildren. He and his wife are avid theatre-goers while Dr. Powell’s personal hobbies include interests in photography, genealogy, and gardening. He is a member of the University College School Centennial choir, where his son and daughter-in-law also sing.view less
