Starting as an ordinary seaman in the battleship King George V, he saw action in northern waters, the Mediterranean and the Far East before retiring in 1946 as lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. After the war he obtained his BA from the University of Toronto, then attended the Colonial Office Devonshire Course in preparation for 10 years service in Uganda. With the arrival of self-government he moved to West Australia, where he spent two years managing a five thousand acre wheat and sheep property, then to Canada where he joined the public service. He is now retired and living outside Ottawa where his time is divided between writing, his garden and other hobbies. His third book, The Sea Turtle’s Back is an account based largely on his own life and recollections to which he has added the stories of friends and shipmates.view less
