After his army years which began at the age of fifteen, when he became a marksman and athlete, gaining his Pipe Majors qualification, he then went to work on Applecross Estate where he was invited into the deer stalking and management team. The latter half of his stalking vocation was spent as head stalker and he became one of the main contributors to Stalking Magazine during its life of sixteen years, assisting as an instructor on various deer courses.
Now retired to a corner of the estate which had been virtually isolated for sixty years, he and his wife, Gwendy, have created, along with their neighbour, an 'oasis' for the smaller mammals and birds on an otherwise wild coastline. Their sustenance and way of life depends upon hard work and the perquisites rendered by nature. The Author still engages in deer watching and occasional management culling, but now mainly as a guest in the southern woodlands.view less
