I was born in the Netherlands six years before the war, and lived through it along with most of the characters in this book. The S.S.er really was murdered as described; my dad really did go to Montana as described; Evert really did have an arsenal of weapons in our house; we really did have relatives in Utah. Most of the rest, though, is fiction.
My family immigrated to America early in 1949, and I served in the U.S.M.C. from 1953 to 1956,including a year in Korea. after which I attended and graduated from Calvin College. While teaching High School English at a small rural school in Michigan I obtained my master's from M.S.U. During 1963 I attended Western Theological Seminary, followed by six months at a missionary training center in Stony Point, New York.
From 1965 through 1969 my wife and I served as missionaries for the Reformed Church in America, in the Philippines. In 1970 we returned to teaching in Michigan. Because of a contract dispute the entire staff was fired two years later. (The Reese 44 ) I gave up teaching and after our divorce was final, moved to Hawaii where I bought a gift shop which I successfully operated for the next fifteen years.
