This librivox recording comprises part of chapter 22 and all of chapter 23 (The March To The Sea – From Atlanta To Savannah – November And December 1864) of American Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Memoirs. Sherman was one of the premier generals fighting for the North. In 1864, Sherman succeeded Grant as the Union commander in the western theater of the war. He proceeded to lead his troops to the capture of the city of Atlanta, a military success that contributed to the re-election of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman's subsequent march through Georgia and the Carolinas further undermined the Confederacy's ability to continue fighting. He accepted the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida in April 1865. Sherman’s scorched earth policy marching his army through Georgia from conquered Atlanta to coastal Savannah was a strong factor in breaking the South’s will to fight. The South’s surrender came just five months later. He steadfastly refused to be drawn into politics and in 1875 published his Memoirs, one of the best-known first-hand accounts of the American Civil War. British military historian B. H. This book tells a different story than I was ever taught. Sherman always betrayed as the villain. But his own memoirs letters and other communications tell a different story. We just visited Savannah and I’m sure glad we didn’t burn it. Everyone should look back and read aloud true history. Written by the people who lived it.

Excellent. Sherman was an amazing man, always taking care to protect the citizenry of the South so long as they did not attack his troops. His memoirs are fascinating. And I enjoyed the narrator, David Wales (for Libravox), very much -- esp. as his voice reminded me a good bit of John Malkovich. Well worth listening to.

This recording ends abruptly and appears to be incomplete— missing chapters. It was a very interesting memoir of Sherman’s leadership in Georgia in 1864, but the portion dealing with the last events in South Carolina is missing, ending with an account of the fire starting. Since that was the memoir’s climax this was quite disappointing.
