American leaders scrambled to get soldiers in the field to help defend the southern colonies during the Revolutionary War (1775–1783). It wasn’t easy. The Continental Army went through three commanders in less than a year. But luckily, lower-ranked army officers, partisan fighters, and militiamen stepped up to fill the void.
