Bernard Cornwell (1944) schrijft voornamelijk historische fictie. Na de oorlog werd hij geadopteerd door een strikte protestantse sekte. Hij groeide op in Essex, verliet de sekte, ging aan de slag als leraar, werkte als journalist voor de BBC en publiceerde zijn eerste roman in 1981. Hij is vooral bekend door zijn reeksen “Sharpe” en “Het laatste koninkrijk”, die allebei bewerkt werden voor de televisie. Op ITV verschenen zestien afleveringen over de Britse soldaat Sharpe, gespeeld door Sean Bean. Recenter nog werd “Het laatste koninkrijk” verfilmd door de BBC en Netflix, waar miljoenen kijkers zich wereldwijd aan vergaapten. De hele Europese geschiedenis is Cornwells speeltuin: hij voelt zich net zo thuis op het slagveld bij Waterloo als op een Vikingschip. Zijn fictie is altijd gegrond in historische feiten en vaak sterk beïnvloed door mythe en legende. Hij is een van de bestverkopende auteurs ter wereld.
