Washington Irving (1783 - 1859) was the outstanding American writer. The best works of Washington Irving are: Humorous history of New York, by Dietrich Knickerbocker and Rip van Winkle — the story about a person who has overslept 20 years.
The essay "The Enchanted Island" was written in 1840. The author describes the island of St. Brandan, which is one of the mysterious places. Many expeditions have started from the Canaries to find it. Ancient geographers believed, that it was inaccessible.
