About this audiobook

A mind-bending, classic Philip K. Dick novel about the perception of reality.

Named as one of Time's 100 best books.

“From the stuff of space opera, Dick spins a deeply unsettling existential horror story, a nightmare you’ll never be sure you’ve woken up from.” —Lev Grossman, Time

Glen Runciter runs a lucrative business—deploying his teams of anti-psychics to corporate clients who want privacy and security from psychic spies. But when he and his top team are ambushed by a rival, he is gravely injured and placed in “half-life,” a dreamlike state of suspended animation. Soon, though, the surviving members of the team begin experiencing some strange phenomena, such as Runciter’s face appearing on coins and the world seeming to move backward in time. As consumables deteriorate and technology gets ever more primitive, the group needs to find out what is causing the shifts and what a mysterious product called Ubik has to do with it all.

“More brilliant than similar experiments conducted by Pynchon or DeLillo.” —Roberto Bolaño

Author

Philip K. Dick

Over a writing career that spanned three decades, PHILIP K. DICK (1928–1982) published 36 science fiction novels and 121 short stories in which he explored the essence of what makes man human and the dangers of centralized power. Toward the end of his life, his work turned to deeply personal, metaphysical questions concerning the nature of God. Eleven novels and short stories have been adapted to film, notably Blade Runner (based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), Total Recall, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly, as well as television's The Man in the High Castle. The recipient of critical acclaim and numerous awards throughout his career, including the Hugo and John W. Campbell awards, Dick was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2005, and between 2007 and 2009, the Library of America published a selection of his novels in three volumes. His work has been translated into more than twenty-five languages.

Due to COVID I got a new job as a supermarket delivery guy. It can be a lonely existence but you get to know the customers but also do lots of driving inbetween. I’ve been really enjoying music and podcasts. Recently tho I’ve been listening to Ubik. The whole thing is fantastic (including the production) I’ve been riveted and time has flown by. I’d recommend this to anyone

This book wasn’t for me. I didn’t care for the story, and while the eccentric narration didn’t bother me as much as it did others, it could’ve been toned down a bit. It was also weird to read a futuristic book that takes place in 1992. I know it was written in 1969, but it’s a bit of a leap to create a world this drastically different just 23 years in the future.

PKD’s writing is predictable, rote and highly overrated. Let me save you precious hours of your life: don’t.

The ideas of collect consciousness, jungian ideas and the ability to be in a “half life” state and still commune with the “real” world. The end leaves you questioning “reality” of everything… it is a creative way to look at and view consciousness and although I had to re read some sections, it is amazing…

I agree with the reviewer who was put off by the narrator. He is unbearable. Every character speaks in the most exaggerated manner possible. It’s as if the narrator thinks he will never have another opportunity to ACT!!! and he is going to give it 1000%. I was enjoying the story, but I had to give up I couldn’t take it. Very disappointing.

Perfect rendition of a perfect book. At last a true inspiration for some of Tim Power's books is revealed.

Hated the obnoxious narrator. A flat read would be better than this overly emoting obnoxious characters.
